F. lever to raise, L. levare; akin to levis light in weight, E. levity, and perh. to E. light not heavy: cf. F. levier. Cf. {Alleviate}, {Elevate}, {Leaven}, {Legerdemain}, {Levee}, {Levy}, n.] 1.
